Guarnaschelli is the daughter of cookbook editor Maria and John Guarnaschelli. Barnard College awarded her a diploma in art history in the year 1991. She worked in the American Place restaurant for one calendar year on the minimum wage , from the year 1991 through the year 1991. Guarnaschelli's culinary experience started while watching her mother experiment with various recipes at home , while she was editing books. Guarnaschelli worked with Larry Forgione (whose son is Iron Chef Marc Forgione), and afterwards at several eateries in France, New York and Los Angeles, including Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Before joining Butter the restaurant, she served as an executive chef at the Patina restaurant, owned by Daniel Boulud and at Joachim Splichal's Patina. In the years prior to its closure, she served as the executive chef of The Darby. She chairs the museum's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli released her first cookbook in 2013. "Old Foods from School What I learned about how to Cook" includes autobiographical information and her favorite recipes from books she's modified to be suitable for the home.
